AnninPA's Guide to University City

Marigold Kitchen by AnninPA
Mon, Jun 23rd 2:44 pm

I just went to the Marigold Kitchen for the first time since the new chef took over, and cannot say enough about what a great time we had. The food was lovely-- fresh and refined without being gimmicky or pretentious. The service was perfect, friendly and attentive. I hate grits, but the Marigold's are brilliant. Our party of 8 enjoyed a leisurely dinner on a Saturday night and, to the restaurant's credit, they never as much as hinted that there were people waiting for our tables. I can't wait to go back, and I know it will be soon.

World Cafe Live by AnninPA

I went back to World Cafe last night and they had gotten their act together much more than the last time I was there. Service was fine, friendly and reasonably rapid. Much, MUCH better than the last time I was there.

Great room. Great music. Marginal food, at best. Last time I was there (and I go a fair amount) the service was terrible-- it took a solid hour to serve our drinks. It's worth it because the music is so good and it's generally a wonderful place to listen.

Abbraccio by AnninPA

I must be really lucky, despite the negative word of mouth about Abbraccio, I have had fine food and great service every time. Love the fireplace in the winter and the airy, Tuscan feeling of the dining room in the summer.

Nara japanese by AnninPA

This place has been here since the dawn of time. Their lunch boxes (which is what they call bento boxes for some reason) are very fresh and very reasonably priced. Much broader selection than Mizu. It's nice to have a choice within a few blocks.

Clark Park Farmers' Market by AnninPA
Mon, Oct 15th 3:42 pm

Well worth the trip--the Asian pears at North Star Orchard are beyond fabulous, and both North Star and Fahnstock have great apples. Big Sky has great bread and granola, though it's a bit pricey. The veggies are so fresh they keep longer than you expect because you really are buying them fresh picked-- which makes you wonder how long the stuff in the supermarket has been sitting around. Great farmer's market-- the real deal.

Pod by AnninPA
Mon, Oct 15th 3:39 pm

Everyone says the same thing about Pod-- "the sushi bar on the Starship Enterprise." Not that there's anything wrong with that. The food is fine, though I don't find it all that adventurous, and the atmosphere is fun.

Great place to go, even if you don't like beer-- the pizza is beyond fabulous.

UPenn Museum of Archaeology & Anthropology by AnninPA
Wed, Jul 25th 6:22 pm

This is one of the greatest museums of its kind in the world. The Penn museum has been finding amazing things for a hundred years, and lots of them are on display right here. It's the real deal.

Black Cat Gift Shop by AnninPA

Could they possibly fit more stuff into this tiny store? A nice offbeat collection of quirky things and the best place to get cool socks.

The Last Word Bookshop by AnninPA
Wed, Jul 25th 6:17 pm

Great place-- well organized enough so you can find something specific you're looking for, random enough that you leave with a great book you were NOT looking for. Nice people too.

Mizu Sushi Bar by AnninPA
Wed, Jul 25th 6:15 pm

Good, reliable, affordable sushi. The menu is limited and it's easy to get tired of the choices, but it's a fine place for a quick lunch or a light dinner.
