Naked Chocolate Café

A picture is generally worth a thousand words, but when the subject is the  Naked Chocolate Café, a picture is worth at least five thousand. But even a photo essay wouldn’t do the chocolate shop and café justice – to get a real sense of it, you truly need a whiff and a taste. Stop by the Naked Chocolate Café, which opened its University City branch at 3421 Walnut St. last November, and judge for yourself.

The desserts run the gamut from bite-sized chocolates to decadent mousse to playful cupcakes, with everything in between. There’s also your whole slew of regular cafe drinks, but the chocolate drinks are what will really catch your eye. On a chilly day you might want a sipping chocolate (thick, luscious European-style hot chocolate, offered in no fewer than four varieties). I stopped in on a typically muggy Philadelphia June day, though, so the frozen drinks were much more appealing. I ordered the Frozen Drinking Chocolate in the mocha blend (it’s also available in the same spiced varieties as the hot chocolate, as well as blended with fresh fruits), which came with a towering mound of fresh whipped cream on top, dotted with chocolate shavings.

Highlights among the individual chocolates are the bee-shaped Honey Lavender chocolate, the Peanut Butter Melt-Away (like a high class Reese’s!), the Force Noir, with its 72% dark chocolate ganache filling (the ultimate pure chocolate experience), and the gold-powdered pyramid-shaped Flambe, filled with a ganache made from Naked Choclate’s signature spicy mix – that warm feeling creeping up the back of your throat? Yup, jalapeno and chocolate mix magically, as it turns out!

Naked Chocolate is any chocolate-lover’s heaven. Just make sure to ask for a glass of water on the side to avoid an accidental chocolate overdose.
