Marvelous + More!

Ever wonder about that music that you hear on 40th Street when walking past Smokey Joe’s? For years I walked right by, never really thinking about it, figuring it was coming from the bar. Once I stopped to think about it, though, that didn’t make any sense – Smoke’s would never play anything this good!
The music actually emanates from a single speaker set up on the ground next to the easily-overlooked door to The Marvelous!, an awesome store selling vintage records, cd’s, comics, and even instruments. Walking down the stairs into the basement shop I felt like I was stepping back in time. Of course, if it was really the 70’s then the selection of classic vinyl (as well as new LP’s) covering a wide range of genres wouldn’t be accompanied by rows of used cd’s, but I’ll ignore that.
The space also doubles as a venue, booking various gigs throughout the year. It’s the ultimate intimate concert experience, as the bands squish into a corner of the store and the audience piles in amongst the rows of records – I checked out psych-rock band Deep Possum a few months ago, and the space was filled almost to capacity with about 30 people, none more than a few feet from the rock stars.
