Earth Cup Café: Coffee in its True Form
Posted by Samantha Lazar on August 12, 2009
University City has no shortage of cute cafés, but I’ve found a new favorite: Earth Cup (formerly Sam’s Place), at 45th and Pine. Sam’s place was a neighborhood institution, serving up coffee, bagels, and ice cream to generations of West Phillyites for over 25 years. When it was preparing to shut its doors in 2008, long-time customer Natasa Borcanin swooped in to save the day. A professional barista who is truly passionate about coffee (as are all the super-friendly staff), she gave the shop a makeover, turning it into Earth Cup and specializing in organic, fair-trade custom blends.
Earth Cup’s mission is to showcase coffee in its true form, and all their grounds are as fresh as can be – nothing in your cup will ever be a week past its roast date. Not surprisingly, the shop has been steadily garnering devotees: coffee connoisseurs who won’t settle for just any cup o’ joe, locals loving the friendly neighborhood vibe of the place, and students sipping iced drinks on the spacious porch. (The interior is a lot of fun too, from the artwork on the walls to the collection of eclectic tea and coffee pots hanging from the ceiling: bring in a cool teapot to donate to the collection, and if Natasa likes it you can trade it for coffee!)
Earth Cup has all the regular coffee options that you’ve come to expect (including the famous “Whoop Ass” blend that Sam’s Place served up for years), as well as all sorts of fancy espresso drinks, made with a combination of coffee-passion and state-of-the-art machinery. I just wish I’d discovered this place sooner – they serve the best coffee I’ve had in months.

Why was your friend in an area meant for employees? or was she an employee? Anyway, I know the owner - she is the sweetest person and it always seems to me that all the employees there treat the customers very well. And I love her new place. I believe there is a 2nd branch near Temple hospital? They also have a superb collection of organic teas to choose from.

I have to say, Natasa *really* knows her expresso drinks!! The expresso's and latte's are yuummmmmyyy. Best ive had in all of Philly. I love this place, and am so happy it is in my neighborhood for lazy latte's on sleepy sunday mornings....mmmm..... Truthfully, I feel like it is rarely worth it to indulge in specialty coffee drinks-- they are so often a disappointment (im talking to you, debruno's CC locale. blech.), but i've never been disappointed with earth cup-- each time it has been well worth the splurge.

I had also frequented Sam's Place from 2002-2006 and thought it was "okay;" ... however, I am also a friend of the person who fell through a hole in the floor. I am really upset that the owners could be so negligent and callous toward its customers. What if Phila's L&I Dept. were to hear about this blatant disregard for people's safety? As long as the owners are doing nothing to guard those stairs, they are creating a health hazard.

I have long been a supporter of Sam's Place in all its incarnations - since 1989, as a matter of fact. I am a little disappointed in the new owners, though it has nothing to do with their coffee. A friend of mine fell down an unguarded flight of stairs there a couple of months ago, while reaching for a paper towel to clean up a spill. She suffered serious bumps and bruises, and is lucky she did not break any bones. Her knee will probably never be the same. Despite her repeated requests, they have done nothing to put a barrier around this gaping hole in the floor. God forbid someone more litigious injures themselves there. The owners don't really seem to care about the safety of their customers.
